The Gendered City Indices are designed to be measurable, comparable, and actionable, providing a framework for analyzing and transforming cities through a feminist lens. Each index targets a specific domain of urban life—from walkability and safety to economic participation and access to care infrastructure—acknowledging the complexity and intersectionality of urban inequality. By integrating spatial data (like infrastructure and layout), social dynamics (such as harassment, inclusion, and visibility), behavioral patterns (like route choices or travel times), and economic indicators, the indices offer a 360-degree view of how gender shapes life in cities.
This index evaluates how walkable a city is for women and marginalized communities by assessing factors such as street lighting, sidewalk quality, perceived safety, accessibility, and land-use diversity. In Amsterdam, the GWI has been applied to various neighborhoods, revealing disparities in walkability and informing targeted interventions to improve pedestrian infrastructure.
Analyzing transport patterns, this index focuses on access and barriers specific to women and gender-diverse groups, considering factors like affordability, availability, caregiving-related travel, and harassment risk. It aims to inform transportation policies that accommodate the diverse needs of urban residents.
